Questions about Gurgl

Where is Gurgl?

Gurgl is the name of the ski area shared by the villages of Obergurgl and Hochgurgl. It’s located in Tyrol, high in the Ötztal valley, just a 15-minute drive from the well-known ski resort of Sölden.

How do I get there?

Gurgl is about 100km from Innsbruck Airport, which has direct flights from the UK. EasyJet, Thomas Cook and British Airlines all operate nonstop flights to Innsbruck from London Gatwick; the flight takes 2 hours. Transfers from the airport can be booked separately and take around an hour and a half.

What’s the ski area like?

Gurgl is truly one of Austria’s best-kept secrets! A lovely ski area with wide, sunny slopes and a beautiful mountain landscape, Gurgl is a relaxing and uncrowded ski area with virtually no lift queues. Thanks to the high altitudes, the snow cover is almost always guaranteed! Read more about the ski area and the villages of Obergurgl and Hochgurgl >

What are the villages like?

Obergurgl and Hochgurgl are small, high-altitude ski villages. The majority of accommodation is located near or right on the slopes. The villages and their hotels exude charm and exclusivity, although during the Ski Season Opening you can expect a lively atmosphere with plenty of parties! Nevertheless, it never gets uncomfortably crowded here.

Questions about the Ski Season Opening and booking

Why is Snowplaza organising a Ski Season Opening?

One of the most exciting times of year for us is always the chance to trace the first turns in the snow, which signals the official start to ski season! We always share our experiences with you on our website and social media channels. This year, we wanted to share it with you in person – skiing together, partying together and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Here’s to a fantastic winter!

Is this the first year that the event is being organised?

No, Gurgl has hosted a Ski Season Opening for many years now, but former ski season openings were organised with other partners. This means the ski area has loads of experience from recent years, which were always very successful. And it’s through this experience that the ski area has been able to confirm that there is always more than enough snow in November to open the pistes. This is the first year that Snowplaza will co-host the ski season opening in Gurgl. Last year we visited as guests and we hope to see many of you there again this year!

Who is responsible for the bookings?

The local tourism office in Gurgl is responsible for handling all bookings. They will book your accommodation and take care of all the other details of your reservation. For more information, please contact them directly.

What’s included in the price?

For the Ski Season Opening we have created special packages. All packages include:

-Accommodation with bed, breakfast or half board
-2 or 3-day ski pass
-Free entry to all parties
-BBQ on Sunday (drinks not included)

We’re travelling with a group: do you offer discounts?

Groups of 10 or more may qualify for a group discount. Please send an email to [email protected] for customised offers based on the number of people and preferred accommodation type.

Can our company reserve our own VIP or meeting room?

Gurgl offers private tables and meeting spaces in the mountain restaurants, village accommodation and during parties. Please get in touch with Ötztal Tourismus through email, [email protected], or phone, +43 572 00 100.

What happens if there’s no snow?

In the last few years there has been sufficient snow to open (some of) the slopes for the Ski Season Opening in November. The high altitude ensures there is usually enough natural snow. However, should that not be the case, the numerous snow cannons will provide guaranteed snow cover on the slopes.

Isn’t there a second Ski Season Opening in Gurgl?

Yes indeed, Gurgl is hosting a second opening weekend in partnership with SAT1 Bayern from November 14th to 17th. The programme will be slightly different and some members of our team will also be present in Gurgl that weekend. See the Gurgl website for more information >
